Pregnancy, birth and post-partum care are important health challenges for any woman, but for young women, the stakes are even higher. Young mothers and their babies are especially vulnerable to risks and complications.

CenteringPregnancy is a group approach to prenatal care. Pregnant women, up to age 23, meet in groups of eight to twelve, with other women whose due dates are close to their own. They meet every month at first, then as the birth of baby approaches, meet every two weeks. In CenteringPregnancy, group members receive all the components of prenatal care, including health assessment, education and support.

Participants take their own blood pressure, weigh themselves, set personal goals and have an individual check-up with their clinician. Then the group along with the clinician engages together in a facilitated discussion around important health topics such as pregnancy, birth and newborn care as well as overall health and stress management. In this group setting there is more time for women to explore the issues that impact the health of themselves and their babies and families. Women experience greater learning, feel better prepared for labor, birth and infant care, gain friendship and support in the group and have an overall great experience.

In addition, Lifestages and Catholic Social Services’ ParentLink have teamed up to offer young women up to age 23 a complete link to community resources and help to build strong life skills for baby, mom and the family.
